About the circuit

The Sprint starting field on a straight at Interlagos

Information updated: 2026-10-2

Interlagos is in São Paulo, Brazil, and is officially named Autódromo José Carlos Pace. The anticlockwise circuit’s pronounced elevation changes and sequences of corners pack considerable variety into a short lap. Drivers leave the fast main straight for the Senna S, then negotiate the infield before climbing back to the finish.

Circuit history

Construction began in 1938, and the circuit hosted its first F1 world championship round in 1973. Fittipaldi won in 1973 and 1974, while Carlos Pace won at home in 1975. The modern layout differs from the original long circuit. In 2025, Norris won and Verstappen recovered from a pit-lane start to third.

Circuit characteristics

The Senna S and following straight offer opportunities to fight for position, but the infield sequence is equally important to lap time. The final uphill acceleration requires good traction, and a mistake carries its effect all the way to the first corner of the next lap. The short lap creates dense traffic, while safety cars and virtual safety cars after incidents can readily alter tyre usage and pit-stop timing.

Tyre strategy analysis

Different starting tyres and multiple neutralisations produced varied pit-stop timings. Verstappen switched to mediums after his early puncture and then kept chasing. Norris managed his stints from the lead and maintained a sufficient advantage in the closing stages. Antonelli resisted Verstappen’s late attack to retain second, his best result at that time.
