About the circuit

Monza Circuit starting straight

Information updated: 2026-10-2

Monza in northern Italy is one of F1’s most emblematic high-speed circuits. Long straights are separated by chicanes and fast sections such as Lesmo and Ascari. Drag is highly influential here, but braking stability at straight ends and the ability to ride kerbs remain essential for lap time.

Circuit history

Monza was completed in 1922, making it one of Europe’s early permanent circuits. It hosted the Italian Grand Prix when the world championship began in 1950; in subsequent F1 history, only the 1980 Italian round moved to Imola. The layout has undergone several safety modifications, and modern Grands Prix no longer use the old steeply banked oval.

Circuit characteristics

Monza circuit corner-speed analysis diagram

Low-downforce setups improve top speed but reduce the margin under braking and through corners. The first chicane and Roggia are frequent battlegrounds, requiring rapid traction recovery after heavy braking. Slipstreaming helps a follower close, but sustained following can compromise cornering stability, so pit and overtaking windows must be considered together.

Tyre strategy analysis

Verstappen made his single stop earlier than both McLarens and kept the lead. A slow Norris stop briefly promoted Piastri to second, before the team ordered the original order restored and then allowed racing to continue. The main factor deciding McLaren’s internal order was pit-stop execution and the subsequent team instruction, rather than tyre-compound differences.

Key race moments

Stage Race developments
Opening stage Verstappen returned the lead after cutting the first chicane, then passed Norris again.
Tyre-change phase Verstappen maintained his advantage, while Norris lost time in the pits and fell behind his teammate.
Closing stages Piastri handed second back as instructed, and Leclerc ultimately finished fourth.
