About the circuit

Information updated: 2026-10-2

Yas Marina Circuit is on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and runs anticlockwise. Long straights, successive braking zones and waterfront sections create different driving rhythms. The race moves from dusk into darkness, with changing temperatures and track conditions requiring teams to consider both qualifying speed and long-run tyre performance.

Circuit history

Construction began in 2007, and the circuit first hosted an F1 Grand Prix in 2009, won by Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel. In 2010, Vettel again won the finale here and claimed his first drivers’ world championship. Layout changes in 2021 shortened the lap and simplified the previous sequence of slow corners, so lap times on the old and new layouts must be considered separately. In 2025, Norris became drivers’ world champion for the first time here.

Circuit characteristics

The long straight after Turn 5 makes traction out of the slow corner directly relevant to attack and defence. The sequence of corners in the final sector also demands stability under braking and through changes of direction; reducing drag alone cannot deliver an advantage over a whole lap. Traffic after a pit stop is equally important: slower cars and sustained defence can consume the gains from fresh tyres.
