About the circuit

The starting field at Shanghai International Circuit

Information updated: 2026-10-2

Shanghai International Circuit is in Jiading, Shanghai, and its outline echoes the Chinese character “上”. The progressively tightening turns 1 to 2, successive fast direction changes and heavy braking at the end of the back straight test front-end response, tyre loading and straight-line efficiency together. Top speed alone does not deliver a strong result here.

Circuit history

Construction began in 2003, and the circuit first hosted the F1 Chinese Grand Prix in 2004, when Barrichello won for Ferrari. The event later had a hiatus before returning in 2024. Piastri won the 2025 race ahead of Norris and Russell; post-race technical checks also changed the final positions of several points finishers.

Circuit characteristics

Shanghai circuit layout shaped like the character “上”

Turns 1 to 2 require progressively more steering angle, readily exposing car balance and tyre condition. Turns 7 to 8 impose high lateral loads, while the back straight offers chances to close and overtake. Tyre plans must reflect actual degradation: an expected two-stop race can become a one-stopper.

2025 F1 Chinese Grand Prix · Data review

On 2025-3-23, Piastri won the Chinese Grand Prix, joined on the podium by Norris and Russell. This dry race largely revolved around one-stop versus two-stop strategies. Leclerc and Gasly were disqualified afterwards for underweight cars, while Hamilton was disqualified for excessive plank wear, leaving the final classification different from the order across the line.

Tyre strategy analysis

Actual tyre degradation was lower than the initial two-stop expectations, and most front-runners made one stop. Norris developed a braking problem late on and had to manage the risk to retain second. Hamilton chose a second tyre change to chase lap time, but his eventual disqualification resulted from technical scrutineering; these were separate issues.
