About the circuit

Information updated: 2026-10-2

Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, Australia, is a temporary racing venue combining roads around the park with purpose-built sections. Grip is usually low early in the weekend and improves as rubber is laid down. Fast cornering and barriers close to the road demand responsive front-end behaviour and sound driver judgement.

Circuit history

Melbourne finalised its F1 hosting arrangements in 1993 and took over the Australian Grand Prix from Adelaide in 1996. Later changes produced the current, more flowing high-speed layout. Australia opened the 2025 season, with Norris winning in repeatedly changing weather.

Circuit characteristics

Bumps on the temporary circuit and surface evolution over the weekend mean that the balance found in early practice may not transfer directly to the race. Water accumulation can differ between corner sections in the rain. Renewed rain after switching to slicks is often harder to manage than a straightforward wet start. Drivers must also judge quickly within the pit window whether the rain will persist.

Tyre strategy analysis

Drivers started on intermediates, and most switched to slicks as the surface improved. Another spell of rain forced teams to reassess: Norris returned to the pits in time, while Verstappen and some others extended their slick stints but still had to change tyres. Repeatedly crossing the wet-dry crossover made weather judgement more important than the usual choice between one and two stops.
