About the circuit

Information updated: 2026-10-2

Circuit Paul Ricard is in Le Castellet, France, combining long straights with fast, medium-speed and slow corners. Wide run-off areas and numerous layout combinations also make it a testing venue. The F1 layout differs from those used for other events and tests, so parameters must refer to the same version.

Circuit history

Construction began in 1969, the circuit opened for racing in 1970, and it first hosted the F1 French Grand Prix in 1971, won by Jackie Stewart. F1 returned to Paul Ricard in 2018. Verstappen won the 2022 French race, with both Mercedes cars on the podium.

Circuit characteristics

Corner speed analysis diagram

A chicane divides the Mistral Straight, followed by the fast right-hander at Signes and the long Le Beausset corner, which sustain the demands on aerodynamic load. In high temperatures, long corners make tyre management harder. Despite the wide run-off areas, drivers must respect track limits; traffic after stops and penalties can also alter midfield positions.

Tyre strategy analysis

Verstappen pitted before Leclerc, after which the safety car caused by the Ferrari crash allowed others to change tyres. Sainz started on hards, switched to mediums during the safety car and recovered to fifth after another stop later on. His pursuit on fresher tyres also had to recover the time lost to the second stop and a penalty.
