About the circuit

The starting field on a straight at Baku City Circuit

Information updated: 2026-10-2

Baku City Circuit links the Azerbaijani capital’s broad coastal streets with the narrow roads of the old town. A lap of around 6 kilometres includes long full-throttle stretches and slow corners close to the city walls with little room for error. Alternating high-speed and narrow sections demand dependable braking and exits despite a low-drag setup.

Circuit history

Baku joined the F1 calendar in 2016 under the European Grand Prix name. It became the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2017, when Ricciardo won the first race under that name, joined on the podium by Bottas and Stroll. Verstappen won in 2025, while Sainz took his first podium since joining Williams.

Circuit characteristics

The old-town section restricts line choices, while the long straight amplifies slipstream and overtaking opportunities. Qualifying pace and race battles therefore do not impose identical setup requirements. A small mistake at a slow-corner exit can affect the entire acceleration section that follows. With barriers close by, safety-car timing after accidents also changes pit windows.

Tyre strategy analysis

Verstappen started on hards, extended his opening stint and switched to mediums at his only stop. Norris also stopped once but failed to use the change to clear traffic and remained behind Tsunoda at the finish. The difference was not just tyre age but access to running space free of slower cars.
