About the circuit

Ferrari and Red Bull cars cornering at Bahrain International Circuit

Information updated: 2026-10-2

Bahrain International Circuit lies in the desert area of Sakhir. Its standard Grand Prix layout contains several long straights and heavy-braking corners. Racing takes place under floodlights, and wind, sand and temperature differences between practice and the race can affect car performance. Rear traction and tyre degradation are important setup considerations.

Circuit history

Construction began in late 2002, and the circuit first hosted the F1 Bahrain Grand Prix in 2004, with Michael Schumacher and Barrichello finishing first and second for Ferrari. Other layouts have since hosted F1, so Outer Circuit data cannot be applied directly to the standard Grand Prix course. In 2025, Piastri delivered McLaren’s first Bahrain Grand Prix victory.

Circuit characteristics

Turn 10 is a slow downhill left-hander with camber, where the front wheels can lock under braking. Other heavy-braking points and long straights offer opportunities to fight for position, but excessive attack or defence can accelerate tyre wear. Gradually changing temperatures during the night race mean the same compound may perform differently early and late on.

Tyre strategy analysis

Piastri made two stops and rebuilt his advantage after the safety-car restart. Russell used soft tyres for the final stint and held off Norris, who had served his penalty at an earlier stop. Red Bull’s tyre-change problems cost Verstappen time, shifting his aim towards recovering into the higher points positions.
