Information updated: 2026-10-2

Suzuka Circuit in Japan’s Mie Prefecture is known for its figure-8 layout formed by a crossover bridge. The Esses, Degner curves, Spoon and 130R combine into a high-speed driving challenge. Cars need consistent front-to-rear balance, and a driver’s line choice in one corner affects several that follow.

Circuit history

Honda built Suzuka to test cars. Designed by John Hugenholtz, it was completed in 1962, but did not host its first F1 Japanese Grand Prix until 1987. In 2025, Verstappen earned his fourth successive Japanese Grand Prix victory here, extending the winning run that began in 2022.

Circuit characteristics

Repeated high-speed direction changes make downforce and steering response particularly important, while imposing high lateral loads on the tyres. Over a race distance, even a slightly faster following car may struggle to stay close and overtake. The position after a pit stop can therefore shape the victory battle, while extending the opening stint requires weighing old-tyre pace against the benefit of clear air.
