About the circuit

The starting field under the lights at Lusail Circuit

Information updated: 2026-10-2

Lusail International Circuit is near Doha, Qatar, and was originally designed mainly for motorcycle racing. Medium- and high-speed sequences occupy most of the lap, while a main straight longer than a kilometre offers an opportunity to attack at Turn 1. Night-time lighting, sustained lateral loads and tyre-use restrictions together shape how F1 races unfold here.

Circuit history

Lusail hosted Qatar’s first MotoGP event in 2004 but did not stage its first F1 Grand Prix until 2021. From 2023, Qatar entered a new long-term phase of hosting F1. In 2025, Verstappen won here ahead of Piastri and Sainz, keeping the drivers’ title undecided until Abu Dhabi.

Circuit characteristics

Diagram of cornering speeds and gears at Lusail Circuit

The flowing, closely spaced medium- and high-speed corners place a sustained burden on tyres, while the short straights give drivers little time to rest. Tyre safety requirements directly restrict strategic freedom. In 2025, each tyre set could cover at most 25 laps, so teams had to calculate safety-car timing, laps already completed and the remaining distance together.

Tyre strategy analysis

A limit of 25 laps per tyre set meant the 57-lap race required at least two stops. When an early safety car appeared, Verstappen and others pitted, but both McLarens stayed out. After the field was reordered, McLaren still had to meet the same tyre-use obligations, so their initial track position could not be converted directly into an advantage at the finish.

Key race moments

Stage Race developments
Start Verstappen passed Norris and followed polesitter Piastri.
Early safety car Hülkenberg and Gasly were involved in an incident; neither McLaren pitted with most of their rivals.
Closing stages Norris passed Antonelli for fourth, while Sainz retained third.
