Information updated: 2026-10-2

Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló, Spain, combines a long straight, long-radius corners and fast direction changes. It is often used to assess aerodynamic efficiency and tyre management. The current F1 layout uses successive fast corners in the final section; lap records from different layout eras cannot be mixed directly.

Circuit history

The circuit first hosted the F1 Spanish Grand Prix in 1991 and has long served as both a testing and Grand Prix venue. In 2023, F1 returned to a layout bypassing the final chicane, changing lap length and corner count accordingly. Piastri and Norris delivered a McLaren one-two here in 2025.

Long corners load the tyres continuously, requiring both single-lap responsiveness and long-run consistency. The end of the straight offers overtaking chances, but staying close depends on performance through the final corners. Heat makes tyre degradation especially important. After a safety car, the remaining available tyres may also alter the original pit-stop plan.

Tyre strategy analysis

Red Bull initially pressured McLaren with a more aggressive three-stop strategy. Antonelli’s mechanical failure brought out a late safety car, and the leaders changed tyres again, partly neutralising the original strategy differences. Verstappen restarted on hards while both McLarens retained more favourable positions. Battles and penalties in the final laps settled the remaining places.

Key race moments

Stage Race developments
Opening stage Piastri retained his pole-position advantage, and Norris later repassed Verstappen.
Second half Antonelli’s stoppage brought out the safety car, and the leading group changed tyres together.
After the restart Verstappen collided with Russell and was penalised, while Leclerc took third.
