Information updated: 2026-10-2

Zandvoort lies among dunes on the Netherlands’ North Sea coast. Undulations, successive corners and banking give it a distinctive character. The lap is short but requires constant activity, with few long straights allowing the car and tyres to recover. Following, traffic and tyre temperatures continually influence the rhythm.

Circuit history

Racing began at the circuit in 1948. It first hosted an F1 world championship round in 1952, when Ascari led a Ferrari sweep of the podium. The Dutch Grand Prix left the calendar for a long period after 1985. Its planned 2020 return was prevented by the pandemic, and it finally resumed in 2021. Piastri won in 2025, while Hadjar took his first F1 podium.

Circuit characteristics

Banked corners impose different forces from flat ones, and entry lines affect subsequent acceleration. Wind direction and the coastal environment can also alter car balance. The track is not wide, and leaders often need to wait for chances when encountering slower cars. Whether to pit under a safety car and whether both cars can complete a smooth double-stack amplify strategic differences.

Tyre strategy analysis

Repeated safety cars closed the gaps and offered lower-cost tyre-change windows. McLaren double-stacked its cars and retained positions near the front. Bearman, starting from the pit lane, finished sixth with one stop. Norris’s mechanical failure ultimately changed the result; his lost points cannot be attributed to a conventional tyre-strategy choice.

Key race moments

Stage Race developments
Lap 23 Hamilton’s crash into the barriers brought out the safety car, and the leaders changed tyres together.
Second half Leclerc collided with Antonelli, bringing another Ferrari retirement.
Final stage Norris stopped and retired, while Hadjar retained third for his first podium.
