Information updated: 2026-10-2

The Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria, has a short lap but pronounced elevation changes. Straights, climbs and heavy-braking corners dominate the first half, followed by successive medium- and high-speed turns. Many short laps make lapped traffic and small driving errors more likely to affect the gaps between drivers.

Circuit history

F1 history here began at the Österreichring in 1970. Redevelopment from 1995 to 1996 shortened the track, which welcomed F1 as the A1-Ring in 1997. Operating as the Red Bull Ring, it hosted the Austrian Grand Prix again in 2014. Norris won the 2025 race, with Piastri second and Leclerc third.

Circuit characteristics

The uphill heavy-braking zones favour attacks, but locking a tyre directly affects the following stint. The second half requires sustained corner speed, and following another car can increase tyre strain. Track limits in the final corners demand precision and constant adjustment between attacking and preserving tyres. F1’s current circuit page lists Piastri’s 2025 time of 1:07.924 as the fastest lap; the Red Bull Ring website retains Sainz’s 2020 time of 1:05.619 as its historical record. The two sources use different record definitions.

Tyre strategy analysis

Both McLarens made two stops, using mediums, hards and then mediums. Piastri extended his opening stint to try to attack on fresher tyres later, while Norris maintained a sufficient lead. Close battles between teammates increased tyre and braking risks; a pace advantage did not make stint length irrelevant.

Key race moments

Stage Race developments
Before the start A problem with Sainz’s car prompted an extra formation lap, reducing the actual race to 70 laps.
Opening lap Antonelli and Verstappen collided, eliminating both cars.
Second half Piastri kept chasing, but Norris ultimately retained the lead.
