About the circuit

Information updated: 2026-10-2

The Hungaroring is near Budapest. Linked medium- and low-speed corners occupy most of the lap, with relatively short straights. Cars are almost constantly braking, turning or accelerating, requiring strong front-end response and mechanical grip. Downforce lost while following affects subsequent corners too, making track position particularly important.

Circuit history

Construction began in 1985, and the venue was ready to race about nine months later. It first hosted the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix in 1986, won by Williams driver Nelson Piquet. In 2025, Norris won on one stop, only 0.698 seconds ahead of the two-stopping Piastri.

Short straights do not make top speed irrelevant, but setups usually place greater emphasis on efficiency through successive corners. A driver emerging into traffic after a stop may struggle to pass even on fresher tyres. Conversely, extending a stint can create a chance to eliminate a stop, converting tyre management into track position before defending against the late pace difference.

Tyre strategy analysis

Norris extended his opening stint to the end of lap 31, then ran to the finish on hards. Piastri and Leclerc made two stops. Piastri repeatedly closed on fresher tyres late on but could not pass. The race directly pitted a one-stop strategy for track position against two stops for speed.
