Information updated: 2026-10-2

Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve lies on Île Notre-Dame in Montreal, Canada. Long straights link slow corners and chicanes, requiring repeated deceleration from high speed followed by rapid traction recovery. Nearby barriers leave little room for error, making braking systems and kerb-riding ability important.

Circuit history

Montreal first hosted the F1 Canadian Grand Prix in 1978, when Gilles Villeneuve took his maiden F1 victory at home. The circuit was subsequently named after him. In 2025, Russell won from pole, while teammate Antonelli finished third to reach an F1 podium for the first time.

Circuit characteristics

Compared with circuits of sustained fast sweepers, a lap here relies more on straight-line acceleration, heavy-braking stability and slow-corner exits. The barrier after the final chicane particularly tests line control. Tyre selection is not simply about compound hardness: traffic after a stop can erase the benefit of fresher tyres.

Tyre strategy analysis

The leading group mostly made two stops, but Norris and Leclerc started on hards and ran markedly longer opening stints. The different strategies converged late on, tightening the gaps among the top five. Piastri stopped again during the final safety car and still retained fourth, while Norris’s collision cost McLaren points that had been available.
