Information updated: 2026-10-2

Imola is officially named Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari and lies in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. The circuit runs anticlockwise, with elevation changes and sequences of corners retaining the compact feel of a traditional racing venue. Drivers need to use the kerbs accurately and keep the car stable through rapid changes of direction.

Circuit history

The circuit’s foundation stone was laid in 1950, it was ready for testing in 1952, and racing began in 1953. It hosted a non-championship F1 event in 1963, but its first world championship round did not come until 1980, when it staged the Italian Grand Prix. It became known for the San Marino Grand Prix from 1981 to 2006 and returned in 2020 as the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.

The Tamburello chicane places high demands on positioning at the start and judging braking, while sections such as Piratella and Acque Minerali emphasise high-speed balance. Track position can limit overtaking opportunities, making traffic after tyre changes a major risk. The precise race phase in which a virtual safety car or safety car appears can completely change the benefits of stopping early or late.

Verstappen extended his opening stint and changed tyres during the virtual safety car triggered by Ocon’s stopped car, increasing his advantage.
