About the circuit

Misano World Circuit lies near Italy’s Adriatic coast and hosts the MotoGP Grand Prix of San Marino and the Rimini Riviera. Although San Marino appears in the event name, the circuit is actually in Italy. Slow corners, successive turns and faster right-hand combinations require riders to keep adjusting their rhythm. No single long straight can establish an advantage over the whole lap.

Circuit history

Misano Circuit was built in 1972 and first hosted a motorcycle Grand Prix world championship event in 1980. After a period off the calendar and redevelopment, it returned in 2007, adopting a clockwise direction opposite to that used in earlier races. The venue was later named after Marco Simoncelli. When analysing historical onboard videos, the change in direction must be checked first: the corner sequence of old races cannot be applied to today’s circuit.

Circuit characteristics

For 2026, MotoGP officially uses a length of 4226 metres, with 6 left-handers and 10 right-handers, and a longest straight of 530 metres. The slow areas and linked right turns after Curvone test line planning at different speeds. The connections between the right-handers are especially important: a correction at the exit of the first turn affects the position at the next apex, allowing a gap to build through successive small losses.

What to watch

  1. Through the early direction changes, watch whether riders preserve their position for the next turn. Defending the inside is not necessarily the fastest line; the follower may use a smoother exit to wait for another opportunity.
  2. Around Curvone, watch stability through the faster right-handers. Judge who has the advantage from the line through the whole section, not by inferring a rider’s speed or limit from a single photograph of lean angle.
  3. The exits of the slow final-section corners lead onto the main straight. A following rider who closes here but cannot immediately pass may retain a favourable position for the next lap’s opening, so follow the battle continuously.

Common points of confusion

Misano is in Italy, not within San Marino. The reverse-direction layout used before 2007 differs from today’s circuit. Older sources commonly list 4229 metres; this article uses 4226 metres according to the official 2026 information.

When comparing lap times, distinguish lap records set in sessions such as qualifying from the fastest race lap: they are not interchangeable. Times from different layouts, wet and dry conditions, or different classes cannot be compared directly either.
