About the circuit

Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló is a permanent circuit combining a long straight, long-radius corners and slow turns. MotoGP currently uses the 14-corner layout without the final chicane, with successive right-handers bringing the bikes back to the main straight. Do not focus only on overtakes at the end of the straight: stability through medium and long corners, and speed on exit, often determine whether a following rider can get close enough.

Circuit history

Construction began in 1989, the circuit officially opened in 1991, and it first hosted a motorcycle Grand Prix world championship event in 1992. Event names and layouts have changed over time, with several versions of turn ten and the final section in particular. A redesigned turn ten has been used since 2021. Check the year of an old map rather than applying old lengths, corner counts and lap times simply because the venue is still called Catalunya.

Circuit characteristics

MotoGP’s current figures are 4657 metres, 6 left-handers and 8 right-handers, with a longest straight of 1047 metres. The number of right-handers and their sustained turning time demand continuous management of line and bike attitude on exit. The braking zone before T1 offers a clear attacking opportunity, but the slow areas and fast final corners impose different demands, requiring a setup that accommodates several corner types. Read changes in lap time alongside air temperature, track conditions and the stage of tyre use.

What to watch

  1. Overtakes at the end of the main straight often begin to take shape in the last two right-handers. Watch the quality of the final-corner exit before looking at slipstreaming and braking to understand an attack more fully.
  2. In the long-radius right-handers, compare whether the riders follow different arcs. A rider who appears behind on entry may be choosing a better exit. A momentary mid-corner gap does not tell the whole story of speed through the section.
  3. Understand turn ten in terms of the route used from 2021 onwards. Old and current races have different braking zones and apex shapes there, so old lap times or onboard videos are not exact references for the current line.

Common points of confusion

An old F1 map including the final chicane is not the current MotoGP layout; earlier motorcycle maps may also show the old turn ten. This article uses the post-2021 turn ten configuration without the final chicane.

When comparing lap times, distinguish lap records set in sessions such as qualifying from the fastest race lap: they are not interchangeable. Times from different layouts, wet and dry conditions, or different classes cannot be compared directly either.
