Ryo Hirakawa described his Formula 1 debut at the Mexico City Grand Prix as a dream realised. The late replacement for Esteban Ocon at Haas crossed the line 13th before other drivers’ penalties promoted him to tenth and one point. Even before learning of that promotion, he was happy to finish and to build confidence late in the race.

A late call-up and a first race to finish

According to Formula1.com, Hirakawa had already driven in FP1 as a designated rookie before being called up on Saturday morning for the rest of the weekend. With another hour of practice completed, he qualified 19th and started 18th following Liam Lawson’s grid penalty, then completed his first 71-lap F1 race.

Hirakawa said the long run to Turn 1 made his first start demanding, with braking points and cars alongside, ahead and behind all to consider. He left extra margin because he wanted to finish and learn. When the opening stint lacked pace, he watched what other drivers were doing and learned as he went.

He felt the later phase brought progress: after the Safety Car, the C5 tyre gave him more confidence and he passed two cars. Time penalties for Oscar Piastri and both Alpine drivers subsequently changed the final order, turning his debut into a points finish.

INKA SPORTS Analysis and Summary: Separating progress from promotion

There are two distinct gains here. The move from 13th across the line to tenth came from post-race penalties changing the classification. His cautious start, learning during the first stint and later overtakes describe his own development behind the wheel. Separating them explains both where the point came from and what he took from the drive itself.

When the official interview was published, Haas had not confirmed its Brazil line-up, while Hirakawa had originally been scheduled to race for Toyota in the World Endurance Championship. He said he wanted to savour Mexico and then see what came next. A debut point is a completed achievement; another F1 appearance still requires confirmation from the team.
