About the circuit

The Algarve International Circuit is near Portimão, and the MotoGP Portuguese Grand Prix uses its full motorcycle layout. Its pronounced elevation changes have earned it the description of a rollercoaster circuit: crests partly obscure the view ahead, while descents change the sense of speed in distant shots. To understand a lap properly, consider the line, gradient and exit together, rather than judging how easy each corner is from a plan view alone.

Circuit history

The circuit opened in November 2008, hosting the World Superbike Championship season finale during its opening period. MotoGP first visited in 2020. The venue opened twelve years before its first MotoGP event, so the two dates must not be confused. Details and length definitions for car and motorcycle racing may also differ. This article uses MotoGP’s official 4592-metre figure rather than directly applying F1 data.

Circuit characteristics

The current layout has 15 corners, including 6 left-handers and 9 right-handers, and a longest straight of 970 metres. Elevation changes and turns of different speeds follow one another, requiring riders to plan their lines before the exit comes fully into view. The long main straight is closely linked to the final right-hander: the quality of that exit carries onto the straight. In the middle section, watch how smoothly riders transition the bike and whether extra corrections are needed.

What to watch

  1. Braking for the first corner needs to be considered in relation to the terrain at the end of the main straight. A following rider suddenly appearing closer on camera may reflect different braking, but it can also be influenced by the camera angle. Compare the times at which the riders pass the same reference point.
  2. At the crests and blind corners in the middle section, compare how consistently riders repeat the same line. Extra corrections may affect acceleration into the next section, but a single wobble is not enough to infer a mechanical failure.
  3. The exit of the final right-hander leads directly onto the long main straight. Sacrificing the exit to defend the apex may give the following rider a chance to attack, so follow this sequence through to the next lap’s braking zone.

Common points of confusion

Portimão and the Algarve International Circuit refer to the same venue on this page. Do not confuse it with Estoril, a historic Portuguese Grand Prix venue. The 4592-metre length follows MotoGP’s definition.

When comparing lap times, distinguish lap records set in sessions such as qualifying from the fastest race lap: they are not interchangeable. Times from different layouts, wet and dry conditions, or different classes cannot be compared directly either.
