About the circuit

Mandalika lies on the southern coast of Lombok, Indonesia, where MotoGP uses a purpose-built racing course. Although the word “street” often appears in its name, it should not be imagined as a temporary race around ordinary city-centre roads. The modern layout contains several linked fast and medium-speed corners, while surrounding hills and the coastal setting give the venue a distinctive appearance.

Circuit history

Mandalika opened in 2021 and hosted World Superbike racing that year before welcoming MotoGP for the first time in 2022. Earlier Indonesian Grands Prix were held elsewhere, so the country’s entire racing history cannot be assigned to Mandalika. Surface maintenance also differed between the venue’s early operation and later periods. Old race footage provides background but cannot replace the current event’s track-surface announcements.

Circuit characteristics

Official 2026 figures are 4301 metres and 17 corners, with 6 left-handers and 11 right-handers, and a longest straight of 723 metres. The route repeatedly changes direction, requiring riders to plan adjacent corners as a group. The tropical setting can bring substantial weather changes, but tyre, grip and line assessments must reflect the day’s actual conditions. Proximity to the coast alone does not establish a fixed wind direction or guarantee rain.

What to watch

  1. In the opening section, watch whether riders retain space for the next change of direction amid the start-line congestion. Claiming one apex too early does not necessarily secure the lead through the whole corner sequence.
  2. Through the fast successive turns in the middle section, watch how smoothly each rider transitions the bike. If one needs an extra correction, the loss usually shows at the subsequent exit rather than remaining confined to that corner.
  3. Lines through the last few corners determine the chance to close on the main straight. When the weather changes, consult event information as well as the visible track conditions; do not use the previous day’s lap times directly to judge the current day’s pace.

Common points of confusion

This article uses the official 2026 length of 4301 metres; the 4303-metre figure in older sources is not mixed into this table. Mandalika’s first MotoGP event in 2022 does not mean Indonesia had never hosted a Grand Prix before then.

When comparing lap times, distinguish lap records set in sessions such as qualifying from the fastest race lap: they are not interchangeable. Times from different layouts, wet and dry conditions, or different classes cannot be compared directly either.
