McLaren plans to deliver its final 2026 development phase in stages. Motorsport.com reported Team Principal Andrea Stella saying after Singapore that new parts would arrive in Austin, Mexico City and São Paulo. The package serves both stronger podium contention this season and validation of foundational concepts for the 2027 car.

Three-stage delivery before the complete package faces track testing

Stella's schedule brings upgrades progressively over the next three rounds, then tests the complete package on the different circuits of the final three. He hopes to close on the fastest cars and challenge for podiums on merit; possible wins depend on what the final three races show.

F1's official US preview also lists further Austin upgrades following the Baku development direction and real-track running to inform next year's choices. The United States is therefore both the next points contest and this late development phase's first track test.

Stella explained that aerodynamic approaches become more complex as development of the new generation deepens. Some directions may work and others may not. McLaren wants fundamental ideas intended for next year tested this season, feeding real observations into the next stage.

Seven points over Red Bull keeps the season's competition immediate

The current official constructors' standings put McLaren third on 339 and Red Bull next on 332, seven apart. Second-placed Ferrari has 444, 105 more than McLaren. The distances to move forward and defend the current place differ markedly, keeping immediate upgrade effects important.

Recent driver feedback defines the gap. McLaren recorded Norris fourth and Piastri fifth in Singapore. Norris felt the team was fourth-fastest and still short of podium pace despite competing near the front. Piastri rated Verstappen and Leclerc clearly fast and himself a small step behind Antonelli. Both assessments concern ordinary race speed rather than one pit stop or overtake.

INKA SPORTS analysis: Why this season's upgrades can serve next year

Staged delivery means the next three and final three races answer different questions. Austin through São Paulo can test only the parts fitted at that point, informing later deliveries; missing podium pace in the first event alone cannot reject an incomplete package. Once all upgrades are fitted, the final three better test repeatable benefits across circuits and which fundamentals merit retention for 2027.

The drivers' feedback makes sustained reduction of the leading-car pace gap the central measure. Both cars following better on comparable tires and conditions, with gains recurring across circuits in full specification, would support the direction more than one podium. Results gained chiefly through retirements or timing cannot prove validation if the normal pace gap remains. No public comparison data yet assigns the deficit to one specific aerodynamic part.

Conclusion

McLaren enters Austin under pressure with a seven-point lead over Red Bull. The next three rounds test whether successive parts address the speed shortfall, and the final three whether complete-package benefits recur. Podiums on pace and competitiveness across tracks separately test this season's aim and next year's development direction.
