Ayao Komatsu and Rafael Camara speak in the Haas garage on Friday at the 2026 Sao Paulo Grand Prix

Haas brought Rafael Camara’s F1 debut forward to Brazil, but team principal Ayao Komatsu said the choice was difficult. Ryo Hirakawa’s short-notice appearance in place of Esteban Ocon in Mexico, where he finished tenth, gave the team a serious alternative.

In an interview published by Formula1.com, Komatsu praised Hirakawa’s preparation and professionalism in taking on qualifying and the race. A key argument for Camara came from the Portimao test in a previous-generation car. In changing conditions, Komatsu valued not only his lap times but his ability to manage pressure and stay focused.

Komatsu held several calls with Camara before deciding. He believed the youngster could shut out distractions and simplify the task around his driving and feedback. Although Camara already had a full-time seat for 2027, Haas still considered the risks of an early home debut with limited preparation.

Camara finished Friday’s two practice sessions in 18th and 16th. He said the home crowd made the build-up emotional, but driving allowed him to focus on familiar work. Previous-car testing helped his preparation without fully reproducing the feel of a 2026 car.

There were lessons to address too. Formula1.com, quoting the stewards’ document, reported a reprimand for impeding Charles Leclerc at Turn 15. Komatsu also said Haas had a useful baseline, while hard-tyre performance and extracting the potential of different compounds required further work.

INKA SPORTS Analysis and Conclusion: From changing test conditions to a home debut

Haas have confirmed Camara only for Brazil so far, with later rounds also involving his F2 title commitments. INKA SPORTS sees Komatsu’s key evidence in the ability to focus on driving and feedback as conditions changed. That quality can help manage the external pressure of a home debut, while Friday identified concrete learning tasks in tyre use and working around other cars.
