Seventh seed Świątek beat compatriot Fręch 6–2, 6–1 in the Wuhan Open women’s singles second round on October 14 to reach the last sixteen. WTA reported one hour 43 minutes and her fortieth tour win this season.
Seventh in WTA 1000 career wins
It was her 149th WTA 1000 win. In WTA's count since the category began in 2009, she passed Serena Williams' 148 for outright seventh.
Svitolina tested in three sets
Fifth seed Elina Svitolina beat Samsonova 6–2, 5–7, 6–2 the same day. She had two second-set match points, but her opponent saved them and leveled before Svitolina took the decider.
Both continue pursuing Finals qualification. WTA's listed Race—the current-season points ranking for those places—has Svitolina sixth and Świątek tenth. Their qualification contests remain open.
