A junior title and eight Moto2 wins

Raúl Fernández comes from Madrid in Spain. He developed through domestic junior racing and the Red Bull Rookies Cup, winning the Moto3 Junior World Championship in 2018. He began his first full Moto3 world-championship season in 2019 and took pole positions, podiums and two Grand Prix wins in 2020.

After moving to Moto2 in 2021, he won eight Grands Prix in his rookie season, contested the championship with his teammate and finished runner-up. The difference between a large number of wins and the final championship points provides a specific competitive context for understanding his early career.

Premier-class adaptation and a first win for Trackhouse

Fernández entered MotoGP with Tech3 on KTM machinery in 2022, then joined RNF in 2023 and began riding an Aprilia. After improving his results late in that season, he became part of the Trackhouse line-up in 2024, continuing to build experience with the RS-GP platform.

At the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island in 2025, he took his first MotoGP Grand Prix victory, also Trackhouse’s first premier-class win. The journey from frequent junior-class victories to a breakthrough after several years of adaptation in MotoGP illustrates the challenges of different stages of progression.

Aprilia’s independent-team context in 2026

In 2026, Fernández continues on the number 25 Aprilia RS-GP26 alongside Ai Ogura. Trackhouse runs its racing operation independently, with motorcycles and technical cooperation from Aprilia. Factory riders Bezzecchi and Martín form another same-brand reference group.

Fernández has already raced with KTM and Aprilia in the premier class, while his teammate joined this programme after winning the Moto2 title. Continuity within the same team allows both riders to develop from their existing circuit experience and garage relationships.

What to watch

Watch whether Fernández’s long-run performance in practice carries into the Grand Prix, then compare his gap to Aprilia’s factory riders at the same circuit. His first win at Phillip Island provides a starting point for that breakthrough, while qualifying position, tyre performance and finishing results at different circuits help explain how such competitiveness can be sustained.
