About the rally

Rally Sweden began in 1950 as the summer Midnight Sun Rally and switched to winter in 1965. Based in Umeå in 2026, it was that season’s all-snow-and-ice round, with 18 stages and 300.66 kilometres planned.

Studded tyres, snow depth and road order jointly affect the competition. Harder snowbanks can assist turning, while soft snow may trap or damage the car; they are not inherently safe boundaries.

In 2026, Evans won Sweden for the third time, taking consecutive victories after 2025. Katsuta, Pajari and Solberg finished second through fourth as Toyota swept the top four.

Rally history

Founded in 1950: Originally the summer Midnight Sun Rally, the event moved to winter in 1965 and gradually developed the character of the modern snow-and-ice round.

Founding WRC round: It was a founding round when the WRC began in 1973 and, alongside Monte-Carlo and Safari, ranks among the championship’s longest-established events.

Nordic home territory: Swedish and Finnish drivers historically almost monopolised victory here; for a long time a win by a non-Nordic driver was considered unlikely.

Move to Umeå: In 2022, the event base moved north to Umeå, where new high-speed stages made the competitive pace more demanding.

Historic 2026 sweep: Toyota took all four top overall places, becoming the first manufacturer team in 16 years to sweep the podium at two consecutive rounds.

Rally characteristics

Snow and ice surfaces: Sweden is the 2026 calendar’s all-snow-and-ice round. Studded tyres provide grip, while temperature and snow conditions affect the lines drivers actually use.

Snowbanks and risk: Harder snowbanks may help a car turn, but soft snow can trap or damage it; the effect depends on that day’s snow conditions.

Road order: In heavier snow on Friday in 2026, early starters Solberg and Evans faced difficult conditions; road-position effects must be assessed alongside the day’s snow conditions.

Nordic atmosphere: Bonfire viewing spots in snowy forests and a family-oriented fan culture create rallying’s warmest winter welcome.

Event highlights

The lead changed hands: Evans lost the lead to Katsuta in heavier snow on Friday, regained it on Saturday and entered Sunday 13.3 seconds ahead. Each won one of the final day’s Västervik stages; the eventual winning margin was 14.3 seconds, an increase of 1.0 second from the start of Sunday.

Overall results and bonus classifications: Pajari finished third, 46.0 seconds behind, with Solberg fourth. Evans won Super Sunday and was second on the Power Stage, scoring 34 points at the round to raise his season tally to 60. Neuville won the Power Stage by just 0.1 second over Evans.

From summer rally to snow-and-ice round: Rally Sweden began in 1950 as the summer Midnight Sun Rally, moved to winter in 1965 and relocated its base to Umeå in 2022. Studded tyres and snowbanks are distinctive features of the modern event.
