The Shanghai Masters announced on October 3 that world number one Jannik Sinner had withdrawn from the upcoming 2026 tournament. He has not played since winning Wimbledon in July, subsequently missing the North American hard-court season, including the US Open, and the ATP 500 event in Beijing because of a knee injury. His withdrawal from Shanghai extends that absence.
An extended absence and his season’s results
The tournament website relayed Sinner’s social media statement: he was disappointed that he could not take part in this year’s Shanghai Masters as hoped or play in front of the city’s fans, and thanked them for their support. He hoped to see them again next year. No specific comeback plan has been announced.
The announcement cited an ATP season record of 44 wins and 3 losses, listing his five Masters titles at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome, followed by Wimbledon in July.
The Shanghai field and its champions
This year’s Shanghai Masters takes place from October 7 to 18. The official list of entrants includes Djokovic, Zverev, Alcaraz, Shelton, Auger-Aliassime, Medvedev, Cobolli and Vacherot. Sinner defeated Djokovic in the 2024 final, while Vacherot is this year’s defending champion. Four-time champion Djokovic is also in the field.
