From Moto3 runner-up to Moto2 world champion
Enea Bastianini is an Italian rider who developed through the Red Bull Rookies Cup and entered the Moto3 world championship with Gresini in 2014. He took podiums in his rookie season, claimed his first win at home in Misano in 2015 and finished runner-up in 2016, gradually becoming a junior-class front-runner.
After moving to Moto2, he won the world title in 2020 through victories and consistent top-six finishes. He entered MotoGP on Ducati machinery in 2021 and reached the podium in both Grands Prix at Misano during his rookie season, quickly demonstrating competitiveness over long races.
Four Gresini wins and the Ducati factory team
Bastianini joined Gresini in 2022, winning four Grands Prix in Qatar, the Americas, France and Aragón and finishing third overall. His last-lap fight for victory with Bagnaia at Aragón stands as a defining race from that independent-team period.
After joining the Ducati factory team in 2023, injuries disrupted his participation across the season, but he still won in Malaysia. He took two Grand Prix victories and fourth overall in 2024, then pursued a new manufacturer partnership, ending this Ducati chapter.
The 2026 Red Bull KTM Tech3 context
In 2026, Bastianini continues on the number 23 KTM RC16 at Red Bull KTM Tech3 alongside Maverick Viñales. Both joined in 2025, bringing experience from Ducati in Bastianini’s case and Suzuki, Yamaha and Aprilia in Viñales’s.
In his first KTM season, he finished third in the Catalunya Grand Prix, establishing a podium result on the new platform. His long-race experience and current adaptation to the motorcycle together provide the background for following his second Tech3 season.
What to watch
Pay particular attention to changes in Bastianini’s position and lap times in the second half of a Grand Prix, then look back at whether he conserved tyres or settled into a stable rhythm early on. His last-lap battle for victory at Aragón in 2022 is a clear historical example. In the new manufacturer chapter, compare his race performance with his teammate and the KTM factory riders under the same conditions.
