Sonay Kartal beat fifth seed Svitolina 6–2, 2–6, 6–4 in the Wuhan quarter-finals on October 16 for her first WTA 1000 semi-final. In her third event after six months injured, she earned a second top-ten win and second tour semi-final.
Serving steadies after being drawn level
The LTA reported Kartal conceding only five points on serve in the opener, facing no break points and breaking Svitolina twice. Svitolina improved her serving in set two and converted two of seven break chances for the same score.
The decider tightened. Both held through nine games without conceding break points. At 5–4, Kartal earned the set's only break point, also match point, with Svitolina serving to stay in. The LTA described a backhand driving Svitolina behind the baseline and her reply going out to finish.

From returning to repeated seeded wins
WTA detailed six months out with a back injury and a ranking fall from 54 to 170. Returning last month, Kartal played the Billie Jean King Cup for Britain, then reached Beijing's third round, beating Wang Xinyu. Wuhan is the third comeback event, not the first.
She beat Kalinina, then seeds Bencic, Paolini and Svitolina. All three preceding rounds were straight sets. WTA's preview recorded fourteen winners and eight unforced errors in the 6–2, 6–0 Paolini win.
Kartal told WTA she had not expected this level so soon. Ready to return in late August, she instead listened to players with long injury experience and trusted her physio and team rather than rushing.
INKA SPORTS analysis: Five holds let the last break decide
Three straight-set wins showed repeated success, but the quarter-final added a response to being leveled. After two second-set breaks conceded, she held all five deciding-set games without facing break point. That created a potentially match-ending return game at 5–4. The final break mattered because prior holds established the score.
Conclusion
Her third comeback event brings a first WTA 1000 semi-final through restoring serve after set two and waiting for the sole break chance in game ten. Ostapenko is next; their two previous meetings were on grass, one win each. Wuhan's hard-court test is whether Kartal sustains that deciding-set serving.
