Junior racing and a Moto2 title challenge
Luca Marini is an Italian rider and Valentino Rossi’s maternal half-brother. He moved from Italian domestic racing to Spanish junior competition, then raced in European Moto2 before starting a full Moto2 world-championship campaign in 2016. After joining the VR46 organisation, he took his first Grand Prix victory in Malaysia in 2018.
Marini won again in Thailand and Japan in 2019. He was a title contender for much of 2020, but crashes and injury affected the closing stages and he finished runner-up. That championship fight gave him experience of managing a long season and fluctuations in results before moving to the premier class.
The Ducati years and a first podium
Marini moved up to MotoGP on Ducati machinery in 2021 and subsequently gained more premier-class experience at VR46. At the Americas Grand Prix in 2023 he claimed his first MotoGP Grand Prix podium. That year also brought Sprint podiums and a Grand Prix podium in Qatar.
This period established his competitive background in an independent-team environment. Joining Honda’s factory team in 2024 significantly changed his career path: alongside adapting to a new motorcycle, he needed to help advance the RC213V programme with the manufacturer’s technical staff.
His 2026 role in Honda’s factory team
In 2026, Marini continues with number 10 alongside Joan Mir. This is their third season together at the Honda factory team, with continuity in the garage providing a basis for assessing motorcycle improvements and race performance.
Marini’s Ducati experience, Mir’s championship-winning time at Suzuki and feedback from the two Honda LCR riders give Honda a line-up with varied backgrounds. Assessing all four Honda riders at the same circuits alongside the factory team’s results helps explain the relationship between the motorcycle platform and individual performance.
What to watch
Record Marini’s long-run lap times, changes in race position and consistency in finishing, then compare trends over several rounds. For a rider involved in long-term development, sustained practice pace considered alongside qualifying and race results explains the weekend’s work better than focusing only on the fastest lap.
