The Charlotte Hornets announced on October 27 that they will retire Muggsy Bogues' No. 1 jersey during their game against the Milwaukee Bucks on February 11, 2027, local time. The ceremony will take place at halftime at Spectrum Center. Bogues will become the third player in franchise history to receive the honor, following Bobby Phills' No. 13 and Dell Curry's No. 30.

From expansion draft pick to the team's playmaker

Charlotte selected Bogues in the 1988 NBA expansion draft, making him a member of the Hornets' inaugural roster. From the 1988–89 season through 1997–98, he made 632 appearances for the team, averaging 8.8 points, 8.8 assists and 1.7 steals. The Hornets emphasized that the honor recognizes both his ten seasons of contributions on the court and his lasting impact through service to the Charlotte community.

At 5 feet 3 inches, approximately 1.60 meters, Bogues is the shortest player in NBA history. His standing in franchise history is also supported by clear achievements: his average of 10.7 assists in 1989–90 remains the Hornets' single-season record. He is also the only player in franchise history to average double-digit assists in a season, doing so in 1989–90 and 1993–94.

According to the team's announcement, Bogues retired as the Hornets' all-time leader in categories including assists, with 5,557, and steals, with 1,067. He was part of the team's first playoff series win in 1993 and its franchise-best 54–28 regular season in 1996–97. His playmaking, steals and years of appearances together provide the sporting basis for retiring his jersey.

A connection that continued after his playing career

After retiring, Bogues continued to represent the Hornets at community and fan events. Through his family foundation, he has supported young people and families in need with food assistance, education and career development. The team noted that his association with the club as a player and ambassador spans more than 20 years.

Bogues said Charlotte has been home to him and his family for many years, and that he was deeply grateful to join Phills and Curry in having his number retired. He looks forward to sharing the evening with his family and the fans who have supported him since the franchise's earliest days. The February 2027 ceremony will give both his playing contributions and his enduring community ties a permanent place at the Hornets' home.
