2026 Australian MotoGP Sprint winner Marc Márquez holds his Sprint medal.

The Sprint at the 2026 Australian MotoGP Grand Prix, round 18, took place at Phillip Island on October 24. Ducati Team's Marc Márquez won in 19:09.411 and returned to the top of the riders' championship. Álex Márquez finished second, 0.323 seconds behind, with Fabio Di Giannantonio third at 0.590 seconds. Gresini and VR46 thus joined the factory Ducati team on the podium.

Martín's lap-eight crash turns the lead battle

MotoGP's official report stated that Marc Márquez reached Turn 1 first after the start, with championship leader Martín's Aprilia quickly rising from the second row to second place. On lap two, Álex Márquez passed Martín at Turn 10, but Martín retook the position at Turn 1 and continued pursuing Marc Márquez.

On lap three, Martín first attacked at Turn 4 without keeping the position, then tried again at Turn 10 and took the lead. The fight involved more than two riders, with Álex Márquez and Acosta also near the front. Zarco's Sprint ended with a technical problem.

The lead then changed several times. Martín erred at Turn 4 on lap five and Marc Márquez passed. On lap six, Martín overtook again at Turn 1 but could not retain his line through Turn 2. A similar exchange occurred on lap eight, followed by another unsuccessful attempt by Martín to establish himself in front at Turn 4.

The decisive turn came later that same lap. After crossing the inside curb at Turn 7, Martín's bike became unsettled entering Turn 8, lost front grip and crashed. He was second at the time. The accident ended his victory challenge and left Marc and Álex Márquez as the leading pair, with Di Giannantonio moving into the top three.

Rain drops appeared late on as Álex Márquez and Di Giannantonio continued closing, but Marc Márquez held on for his ninth Sprint victory of the season. Less than 0.6 seconds covered the top three at the finish, though that close result came after Martín had left the lead battle.

Bezzecchi recovers to fourth as Ogura penalty drops him to thirteenth

Bezzecchi's fourth place came through a recovery. Starting ninth, he fell to twelfth by the end of lap one, then worked up to fifth. With four laps remaining, he passed Acosta at Turn 1 and finished 1.074 seconds behind the winner as the highest Aprilia. Acosta was fifth at 3.689 seconds.

Ogura crossed the line sixth but received an eight-second post-race penalty for a tire-pressure infringement, dropping to thirteenth in the official result. Binder rose to sixth, home rider Miller to seventh, and Moreira and Lecuona to eighth and ninth. The penalty also changed the points: those four scored four, three, two and one respectively, with Lecuona taking the final scoring place.

The official classification listed fifteen classified riders. Raúl Fernández, Martín, Viñales, Zarco and Bagnaia were not classified; Martín's crash and Zarco's technical problem were explained in the official report. Full positions, gaps and points appear in the results table below.

MotoGP subsequently confirmed separately that Martín would miss Sunday's Australian Grand Prix race through injury and required further examinations. Raúl Fernández would also miss the race; the official report said he remained affected by a fractured right index finger sustained earlier in Indonesia.

INKA SPORTS analysis: Why the title turning point extends into Sunday

The Sprint's title effect has two stages. On track, after Martín retired, Marc Márquez finished and took twelve points to regain the championship lead. Off track, Martín's injury rules him out of Sunday's race. The two contenders, who repeatedly exchanged the lead in the Sprint's opening half, thus face different circumstances on Sunday: Marc Márquez can continue scoring while Martín must address his injury. Their contest at this event cannot continue under equal participation conditions.

Conclusion: A new leader and changed conditions for the Grand Prix

Marc Márquez carries Sprint victory and the championship lead into Sunday, while two injury withdrawals change the race lineup. The next questions are whether Álex Márquez and Di Giannantonio can maintain their late-Sprint pursuit, and whether Bezzecchi can improve his opening-lap position to reduce the burden of fighting forward from midfield.
