Following its October 19 World Motor Sport Council meeting, the FIA announced further 2027 WRC arrangements. The top Rally1 category will accept both cars built to WRC27 technical regulations and existing Rally2-based cars fitted with approved aerodynamic kits. The title structure also changes: a constructors' championship replaces the manufacturers' championship, with an additional WRC teams' title over seven events.

Two technical routes into Rally1

The first route is new-specification WRC Cars built to WRC27 rules. The second is WRC Kit Cars based on existing Rally2 machinery with approved upgrades. The FIA lists new front fenders, a front bumper and rear aerodynamic devices in the kit. Both specifications enter the same top category from 2027.

This separates Rally1 as the name of the top competition category from how a car is built. Existing Rally2 cars do not enter unchanged; they must meet approved-kit requirements. Meanwhile, driver-level support categories WRC2, WRC3 and the WRC Masters Cup remain for 2027.

The maximum turbocharger air-restrictor diameter for both new top-level specifications increases from 32 to 33 millimeters. The FIA says this will improve engine performance for both.

A full-season constructors' title alongside a seven-round teams' championship

The new constructors' championship is open to traditional manufacturers and independent tuners competing in one classification. One eligibility condition is participation in every round of the season.

The new WRC teams' championship uses seven nominated events, including at least one overseas round and the season finale. Both constructors' and WRC teams' titles are restricted to Rally1 cars. Seven rounds do not mean unrestricted event selection without overseas and finale obligations.

The FIA reserves scope to introduce technical or sporting measures where needed to preserve suitable performance differences between vehicle categories. This supports the 2027–28 transition and joint competition for new-specification and upgraded kit cars. Specific balancing measures remain subject to actual regulations and subsequent decisions.

Main participation requirements for the two titles

Item Constructors' championship WRC teams' championship
Eligible entrants Traditional manufacturers and independent tuners Competing teams
Participation framework Must enter every round of the season Seven nominated events
Mandatory events Every round of the season At least one overseas event and the season's final round
Car category Rally1 Rally1

INKA SPORTS analysis: Vehicle entry and season commitment are addressed separately

The changes concern two questions: which car enters the top category, and what season scale is needed for a team title. Rally2 kits offer another vehicle route; the seven-round championship defines a framework for different commitments. They are related, but using a kit car and entering only seven events are not the same condition.

Mandatory overseas and final rounds restrict selection solely around nearby or preferred events. Independent tuners can pursue the constructors' title but must still enter every round. Participation routes expand, but affordability depends on machinery, logistics and the actual calendar, not simply more entry routes.

Conclusion

Top-level WRC2027 competition will offer both new-car and upgraded kit-car routes and both full-season and seven-round team titles. Whether more entrants arrive should be judged by approved-kit availability, declared programs and specific transition measures. Approved eligibility conditions come first; entries and performances must establish the real competitive scale.
